A successful trip to Farnborough for the FRFC Ladies

On Sunday we travelled to Farnborough for the latest instalment of the Hampshire ladies touch rugby tournament. With Last month’s tournament being cancelled it meant that we’d had a 1D style hiatus, leaving us nervous about what our comeback would entail. In typical fashion half the team managed to miss the turning off the M3, leaving us only 10 minutes to warm up… not a great start!

Either way we were determined to show off the new skills we had been practicing so we got kitted up, warm (ish), and on the field ready for game 1 against our long time rivals, Andover. We got switched on early and with Karen as our designated scrum half our game found a new speed. Gorman got over the line for our first try of the day and we held off some tough opposition for a 1-0 win. Coach reckoned it was the best game he’d ever seen us play so we were ready and raring for game 2. We had strict instructions for this one- isolate a Fareham player and mug her off. So this is what we did! With tries from Georgie, Squires, Karen, and 2 from Lizzie we ended the first half 5-0 up. Pretty sure that fitted the brief! The second half saw Gorman get her 2nd try of the day and the game finished 6-0 to us.

The next game was against Aldershot and Fleet and things started shakily. At half time it was still 0-0. A motivational half time talk from Badger did the trick and with 2 tries in quick succession from Squires and Luci, we ended the game 2-0. Much better! Our final fixture of the day was against hosts Farnborough. With a fast paced Gorman outrunning everyone down the wing we were 1-0 up at half time. The sun was going down and the freezing temperatures rolling in but we knew we had more to give. A very debatable try from the opposition sent tensions skyrocketing so, to prove a point, Georgie and Gorman put us over the line for another couple of tries making it 3-1 for the final whistle.

Overall we won the day but with Andover in 2nd and only 3 tournaments left of the season it is still all to play for. All the girls played an absolute blinder but special mentions have to go out to a couple of people- T for being our rock, Robbo for an awesome switch, Carla for always being exactly where I need her (except when she’s occasionally offside), and Valentine for almost getting a try! All in all, a great day at the office. Thanks ladies!
