In a superb game of rugby played between two sides moving the ball with flair and pace the result was anybody’s until the last ten minutes.

In a superb game of rugby played between two sides moving the ball with flair and pace the result was anybody’s until the last ten minutes. For the first time this season it seems we entertained a side at the Rec and played in sunshine rather that wind and rain. This seemed to spur both teams on to play an expansive game of enjoyable rugby entertaining the crowd.
It was Havant who scored first and with the extras took a seven point lead after just four minutes. Shortly after, Harry Lewis reduced that lead with a try in the corner for ‘Bridge and although the conversion was missed the gap was now down to two. A penalty from Mat Norton midway through the half gave us the slenderest of leads.
Two tries from Morris of Havant both converted by Morgan gave the visitors the first substantial lead of the game and with another penalty from Morgan, Havant were now sixteen points ahead as the mid break loomed.
However, Mark Hammond forced his way through for a try in the 38th minute and with Mat Norton converting, the half finished at 15 – 24.
Four minutes into the second half our man of the match Jasper Wallis finished off what had been a whole team effort to touch down and with the conversion the scores were getting close again. A penalty from Norton took us into the lead by 25 points to 24 and the contest was still very much on. Wilkes then kicked a penalty to restore the visitors lead in this see saw match.
With ten minutes to go and with us pressurising the Havant line a loose pass resulted in an interception by Wise who ran the length of the pitch unopposed to score under the posts.
This proved to be the final straw and despite a valiant effort in the last five minutes we could not get back on terms, compounded by a late penalty for the Dolphins who finally ran out winners by 25 – 37.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable game to watch for both sets of supporters. Mark Hammond congratulated Aaron Lee on his debut and Harry Lewis for his second try in two weeks following his debut last week.
Both Fordingbridge teams travel to Sandown and Shanklin on the Island next week.
