Tough defeat to take after conceding in the last minute

In constant rain, both teams put on a display of committed rugby which the hardy supporters on the touchline thoroughly enjoyed.
Fareham’s continuity and good handling was a feature throughout the game, but we matched them blow for blow.

We were first on the board when Mat Norton kicked a penalty in the 10th minute. The hosts struck back with a penalty in the 14th minute and a converted try six minutes later following two missed tackles in the mid field.

We started the second half with renewed energy and Mat converted a penalty in the 45th minute. Dan Brown then scored an unconverted try following fine team play.

Fareham were next on the scoreboard when awarded a penalty try midway through the half to hold a 17 – 11 lead.

Dan then scored his second try with a fine solo effort from inside our own half, converted by Mat. We were now 17 – 18 ahead with 10 minutes to play.

The game entered the last minute with a line out to Fareham on their five-metre line. They were awarded a free kick and taking advantage of a momentary lapse of concentration from us they went the length of the field to score a try which was converted.

Our captain Mark Hammond commented that it was tough loss to take after working so hard to get into a winning position, but was confident we would be on our metal for the visit of Petersfield next Saturday.
