Great win for Fordingbridge beating local rivals New Milton 43 – 20
On a beautiful warm and sunny late autumn afternoon, we travelled to local rivals New Milton for the first time in three seasons. This was the first of the two games between the sides in the new Hampshire Premier League.
It is fair to say that this was a game of two halves and of two very differing styles. The first half was pretty much dominated by the strong New Milton pack who spent long periods of the half in our twenty two. After only five minutes the pressure paid off with a defensive lapse which New Milton took advantage of to score in the corner. The extra’s were missed but the match was underway.
Jamie Tryska responded a few minutes later with a penalty but despite a few moments of open running rugby the half was mostly a game of attrition between the forwards. A penalty from New Milton and a another try from Jamie Tryska kept the scoreboard ticking over. New Milton were disciplined and strong, but we were stout in defence. Especially from the back row of Mark Hammond, Joe Weld and Ryan Hill. With a strong replacement bench this amazing defence was bolstered further by Ross Bealey and James Robinson when they came on. New Milton scored another unconverted try but it was just before the half time whistle that the style and eventual outcome of the game changed when we scored four tries into and out of the break.
Peter Scott showed his amazing pace to score in the corner from his own twenty two to take the match into the second period with honours even at 13 – 13.
The second half the match became much more open and flowing with our backs putting on a fine demonstration of skilled and pacey rugby. Peter Scott scored his second of the game, however, as most of the tries for the afternoon were scored in the corners and New Milton’s pitch is very wide, a lot of the conversions were missed.
Dan Brown, season after season Fordingbridge’s highest try scorer, scored his first of this campaign and the first of his hat trick for the afternoon. Following some great passing from Steve Brown, Mat Norton and Man of the Match Joe Tooze, he touched down in the corner. Jamie Tryska was the next to stretch the lead for us and this time he did manage to convert his own try.
New Milton scored their only try of the half which they converted to give them short lived hope, but two more superb tries from Dan Brown and a penalty from Mat Norton meant that the game finished with a resounding win for us by 20 - 43
