Fordingbridge grind out a narrow 16 -14 win over Millbrook at the Rec
After two weeks off due to the weather, league action resumed at the Rec when we welcomed Millbrook for the return fixture. With the season coming to an end top place in the league is now more or less settled with US Portsmouth fifteen points clear but places in the top four are still very much up for grabs.
With Millbrook sitting in third place before the match just above us it was always going to be a tough match for both teams and so it proved to be,
The scoring was opened when following a penalty infringement after two minutes, Mat Norton converted the ensuing penalty for the three points.
This lead was short lived however, as playing to their strong forward dominated game, a sustained period of pressure in the ‘Bridge twenty two Millbrook saw rumble over for their opening points and with the extras added took a four point lead. It looked as though the visitors would take the first half but our scrum half and Man of the Match Sam Broderick gave us back the lead just before the break and following the successful conversion the half finished 10 – 7 to us.
The lead was stretched just after half time with another Norton penalty. The second half was very physical with two strong teams of equal skill and determination fighting hard for the win.
Millbrook’s chances of that increased when after fifty seven minutes they scored their second converted try to once again establish a narrow lead as the game entered the final quarter.
After sixty one minutes we were awarded another penalty which proved to be decisive giving us a well deserved win over very tough opponents.
We are away to Overton next week in the weather postponed game from last week.
