Having lost their Hooker Adam Hill to sickness just before the start, the day hadn't begun well for Fordingbridge and shortly after kick off things got worse as Portsmouth powered over for the first try of the game. However, 'Bridge hit back with a well worked passage of play that finished with Bird Root scoring close to the posts and Tom Goodwin kicking the conversion to give the Blues a 7-5 lead.
Both teams were committing themselves and tackling hard but Portsmouth regained the initiative with another score close to the posts but with the conversion unluckily coming back off the upright. Back came 'Bridge who thought they were certain to score when Jack Griffiths went over, only for him to lose the ball at the crucial moment. However a try did follow shortly after, courtesy of Alex Whitehorn, to leave the half time score at 12-10.
The second half started with the teams evenly matched and it wasn't until well into the half that the next score arrived with Portsmouth adding another 5 points and nudging into the lead. The game continued to ebb and flow and with only 2 minutes left on the clock, Jacob Chalk broke free on the wing to score in the corner and give 'Bridge a memorable 17-15 victory.
Man of the Match was Dickon Westlake who saved the match twice with two excellent one on one tackles when Portsmouth looked likely to score. A special mention also for Alex Bevan who stood in as Hooker at short notice.
