A strong Fordingbridge attack took advantage of a slow Winchester B start to produce a convincing Hampshire Shield quarter final victory on Sunday.

It was ‘Bridge’s first competitive win of the season and they could have had more points if chances early on had been converted. Much of the first half was spent camped inside Winchester’s half and four forays over the whitewash without a score thanks to excellent Winchester defence told the story. However, the breakthrough came from Alex Whitehorn when he saw a gap and stormed through to put ‘Bridge’s first points on the board. Tom Goodwin added the extras. Another try was scored shortly after by Dom Bowden-Smith and ‘Bridge were firmly in control.

A brief lapse in concentration allowed Winchester to score just before the break but Fordingbridge asserted their dominance early on in the second half. Tries from Toby Peebles, Tom Goodwin and George O’Reilly followed, two of which were converted by Goodwin to take ‘Bridge into an unassailable 33-7 lead. Defensive errors led to a brace of tries being conceded late on but ‘Bridge were the dominant force throughout the game and victory was never in doubt.

They will now play Gosport & Fareham B in the semi-finals.
