Both teams are vying for honours in Hampshire One occupying second and third positions and with the element of a local derby this game fully lived up to expectations.

It was nail biting right until the end as we go down 26 - 32 to New Milton in one of the best games at the Rec over recent seasons.
Both teams are vying for honours in Snows Group Hampshire One occupying second and third positions and with the element of a local derby this game fully lived up to expectations.
An early penalty from Mat Norton gave us the lead which was stretched further by a try from Alex Davenport to push the score to 8 – 0. New Milton struck back after six minutes through Dalton Thomas with a penalty but it was us who scored next through Dan Brown and with the conversion added we were 15 – 3 up.
Just on the half hour Sam Bew scored for New Milton and with the extras added the gap narrowed. With a second try before the half from the visitors, scored by Tom Gould, the match was tied and the game was anybody’s. Mat converted a penalty on the stroke of half time to give us a slender lead at the break with the score at 18-15
With both teams ferocious in attack and defence it was impossible to call the match at this stage. It was again us who opened the scoring in the second half through Peter Scott but four minutes later this was matched by a try from Dale Smith of New Milton.
We pushed the lead to six through the boot of Mat and the score remained unchanged until the last eight minutes of the match. Under pressure on our line, Ben Russell scored for New Milton and with the two points added they took the lead by one point for the first time in the match.
This was not to be the last twist in this incredibly exciting match. With one minute to go we were awarded a penalty in front of the posts, but in a moment of excitement went for a quick tap instead of the safe option. New Milton turned the ball over and Tom Gould broke down the wing to run in unopposed for his second try of the afternoon.
Thanks to Dan Brown charging down the conversion we came away, from this superbly exciting game, with a losing bonus point as the score finished 26 - 32 to New Milton.
Captain Steve Brown commented after: “Of course we’re disappointed to lose, especially as we had the opportunity to win it with the last kick of the match, but we should take heart after such a superb performance. We showed unbelievable commitment and determination and with eight more games to come this season there is still all to play for”
