Fordingbridge 2nd XV earned a losing bonus point in the last 5min of a close encounter against a strong Salisbury 3rd XV.
In a very tight first half we rarely had the ball. Although earning numerous penalties we made some odd decisions and constantly handed the ball back to the opposition. The backs pressed well forcing errors from Salisbury. Matt Maynard, Tim Beer, Graham Branagan and Alex Sanders all made some great tackles to stop Salisbury.
It was 31 min into the game with some rare good handling the Salisbury winger opened the scoring 5-0
Craig Stocker was forced to withdraw from the game with a broken nose. He will look like a forward now. Lewis Bracey stepped in to replace him as hooker. We were unlucky not to level the scoring, Mike Parry showed his pace but captain Dave Gogin’s forward pass denied us. Half time 5-0.
Going down the hill for the second half the was for the taking. Graham Branagan was unlucky not to break through with an interception just 3min into the half.
The game progressed with some very scrappy play from both sides. 15 min we had a line out 8m out. From the catch and drive thye forwards worked a driving maul well but were held up on the line. The platform set from the 5m scrum poor decisions and bad handling cost us an opening score.
Ross Bealey had his usual solid game working hard at breakdowns but lacked support. 20 min in and Salisbury broke away and missed tackles extended their lead 10-0. Just 5min later we lost a scrum on our 5m line. Dave Gogin playing scrum half had his hands up believing the ball had come straight out but they played on and extended their lead with a converted try 17-0.
We had some rare possession, Matt Maynard broke away and offloaded and the backs realised the overlap and Dean Lewis opened our account with a try in the corner. He converted it well 17-7 with 5 min remaining.
2 min later we opted to run a penalty and winger Alex Sanders still had work to do beating two players ran in under the posts for his first senior try. Converted by Dean Lewis 17-14. Thinking we had time remaing full time was called.
Although a losing bonus point the game was there for the taking. Salisbury captain Manny had a rather large smug grin and Bridge MOM Graham Branagan will probably still see it at work on Monday.
With a few below par performances DOD volunteers please.
