Mouland still has touch!

By Dave Donaldson
Fordingbridge travelled to Wheatsheaf and suffered their first league defeat 58-32. Again lack of players forced us to play out of positions.
Josh Goodchild (10) kicked off well and long giving us early territory. Wheats pack were strong and their star player (no 8) picked up from the back of the scrum and ran through numerous missed tackles to open the scoring, converted well by their 10 7-0 after 5mins. From the restart Bridge were awarded 3 penalties in a row eventually on their 5m line the forwards worked well driving forward but were unable to break through. Captain for the day Dean Lewis opted to take the points 7-3 (11 min). Wheats conceded numerous penalties but some odd decisions by Bridge did not convert them into points. 20 mins in Wheats opted to kick one of the few penalties conceded by Bridge 10-35. Minutes later 8 pick again and we were on the back foot 15-3
30 mins in Wheats went in again but avoiding the effort of Josh Merry scored with the overlap 20-3.
From the restart some good handling by their backs earned the bonus point try 25 -3.
With 1min remaining their 8 went over again and we were playing catch up, converted well by their 10
32-3.
Bridge were awarded a penalty from the restart and for the last play of the half Dean Lewis took the score to 32-6.
We were caught napping at the start of the 2nd half and 2 mins in a converted try extended the lead 37-6.
From Josh Goodchild restart (high and long) they fumbled and winger Steve Watson opened the try account well converted by Dean Lewis 37-13.
Wheats went over again after 13min (missed tackles) and extended their lead with a converted try 44-13.
From another long restart the forwards worked well with a controlled maul which they struggled to defend 2 penalties earned by the pack eventually earned the penalty try (Wheats down to14) Converted by Dean Lewis 44-20.
With handling errors from both sides 29min Lewis Bracey (hooker) worked well at the breakdown and another maul led by John Vass and guided by Dave Gogin (9) Prop Phil Collier broke out to score a try converted by Dean Lewis 44-27.
Wheats had a big squad and were able to bring on fresh legs 36min (8) completed his hat trick with a converted try 51-27
Our 2nd half confidence was still good and Dave Gogin confused everyone (including himself) with a great show and go try earning a bonus point 51-32.
With the last play of the game Wheats scored their 9th try –converted, final score 58-32.
Usual great hosts they deserved the win. New player Will Da Silva was MOM.
Next week we host Blandford after 3 away games.
Thanks to our president John Mouland for being a willing volunteer (or was it wrong place wrong time) for running touch.
