Fordingbridge opened their league campaign with 25-12 home victory against an entertaining South Wilts team.
Captained by Jamie Waters Bridge started strongly. After 5min a missed penalty by Dean Lewis caused some confusion in the South Wilts defence earning Fordingbridge a 5m scrum. Keith Walsh playing hooker struck the ball well as he did all afternoon. At the next breakdown he ran a strong line to score the opening try converted by Dean Lewis. 7-0.
With a high penalty count from both sides the forwards had to cover most of the pitch. After 18 mins a solid line out was won by Fordingbridge and som good width played by the backs Dean Lewis scored an unconverted try. 12 -0.
On 35 mins prop Dave Timms showed his strength to power over to score the third try converted by Dean Lewis 19-0
South Wilts had a very quick set of backs and their speed got them their opening score for the last play of the half. 19 – 5 half time.
The second half progressed with poor handling from both teams and the pace of the first half started to tell on the home side . South Wilts had a lot of possession and after 15min scored their second try, converted to bring the game closer 19-12.
Again the penalty count was high and Dean Lewis opted to kick the points to extend the lead 22-12.
With 12 minutes remaining an unfortunate fall resulted in a bad knee injury for a South Wilts player. The game was held up for 10 minutes to attend to player. All at Fordingbridge wish him a speedy recovery.
The game restarted but with injured player still just on the pitch the touch line was moved in to 5m line, confusing and frustrating both teams.
On 35min birthday boy Zak Butler (18) was denied his first senior try when even the referee got confused and blew to say he had gone into touch.
Dean Lewis kicked a penalty for the final play of the game. 25 – 12.
Lewis bracey was awarded man of the match after overcoming his fear of heights being lifted in the line out for the first time.
A great team effort in a very well spirited match gives Fordingbridge momentum to take into their away game at Swanage and Wareham next week.
