This passionate match, postponed from December, took place on a warm, sunny March afternoon which the E’s just won 17-15 to consolidate their position in Dorset & Wilts 2 South. But we gained a much-needed bonus point and belied our lowly league status with a very competitive display.
Ellingham took the lead with a try by Fred Sampson, converted by Andy Weeks, but we pegged them back with a Mark Hammond penalty until Weeks kicked a penalty to give the home side a 10-3 lead at half-time. However after 50 minutes Paddy Flood, running from inside his own half, scored a spectacular try which Mark converted to level the scores.
Mark Hutchinson restored the E’s lead with a try converted by Weeks but another brilliant solo three-quarter try from Luke Mowbray, meant that we again had the chance to draw level but Mark narrowly missed the conversion from out wide. So an honourable draw narrowly eluded us, but this was a performance of great heart and commitment.
