Outstanding in the Fordingbridge squad was the centre, Mark Hammond, last season’s 2nd XV players’ player, who notched up 25 points with three tries and five conversions and enhanced his claims to play for the club’s 1st XV in the opening Hampshire League match at Romsey on Saturday.
Mike Grimes and Paddy Flood went over for two tries apiece and other scorers were Alex Tattersall, Chris Gogin, Keith Walsh and the new 2nd XV captain Jon Vass.
It was truly a lively start to the season, with Wheatsheaf playing with great spirit throughout and storming over for a second-half try.
At the pre-match lunch to herald the start of the new season the President John Mouland spoke of the local ambition to build a new clubhouse facility at the ground which he said “could change the face of sport in the community”.
He said “We must build on the feel-good factor created by the Olympics and the Paralympics and respond to Lord Coe’s call to inspire a generation”.
