Bridge complete the double against local rivals New Milton running out 58 -22 winners.
By Martin Norton
A hard fought victory which keeps us in the top four of the Hampshire Premier League.
For the return fixture of the season we welcomed New Milton to the Rec on a mild but overcast afternoon. Following a VP’s lunch, the crowd was large and expecting a good game of rugby. It is fair to say that it was a match that we controlled straight from minute one and did not look like losing.
Thirty minutes into the game we were twenty points to nil up after tries from Craig Stocker
and Tom Tully
. Along with two penalties, Mat Norton converted both tries to put us well and truly in the driving seat.
However, New Milton scored an unconverted try just before the break to boost their hopes, but this was immediately cancelled out by a second try from Tully on the stroke of half time. Mark Hammond
converted, and the teams changed at half time with Fordingbridge twenty seven points to five up.
The second half saw seven tries the first of which came from New Milton immediately from the kick off but with the conversion was missed. A penalty from Mark Hammond
and a converted try from Peter Scott
really put the game out of New Milton’s reach at thirty seven points to ten.
Despite this, New Milton never stopped pressurising us and were rewarded with another try on sixty three minutes. Four tries in the last ten minutes sealed the game. we scored three in quick succession one each from Pat Badger
and Joe Tooze
and a hat trick try for Tom Tully
With Mat Norton on his way to A&E with a rib injury, Mark Hammond
stepped up to the kicking duties converting all three to finish with a 100% success rate for the afternoon. New Milton did have the last say with a well worked try just before the final whistle which they converted for their four try bonus point. Tom Tully
was awarded Man of the Match.
There is a break next weekend but on the 26th Jan Fordingbridge travel to Bognor who are just one place above us in the league and the 2XV entertain Chineham at the Rec.
