Our joint Fordingbridge and Overton Squad March on in the Hampshire Plate!

Having had to concede their match to New Milton in the Cup Competition, Fording’Ton dropped down into the Plate. Their 2nd Round opponents were Farnborough 2’s.
Despite being about as far apart as you could get and still being in Hampshire, there was very little between the teams on the pitch, in what turned out to be a rollercoaster of a game, and a fantastic advertisement for Junior Rugby.
Farnborough, with the bigger team were, like Tott’s our last opponents in the Cup, intent on playing a very direct, one-dimensional game. And despite early pressure from Fording’Ton, it was Farnborough who scored first from a driving maul. Fording’Ton respond well to the setback, and continued to play their expansive passing game. Quick hands lead to their first try. Farnborough roared back scoring two tries, one being converted. Fording’Ton responded again and scored, what was described by the Referee, as the best try he had seen in a number of years. Going through four or five phases, the ball was recycled quickly from the breakdown, link play was well executed, running lines were superbly taken and the end result was a try for Ollie.
Half Time – Farnborough 2’s 17 Fording’Ton 10.
The first ten minutes of the 2nd half saw Fording’Ton absolutely dominant. Having been instructed at half time to get the ball through the hands, to make most of the spaces out wide on the big pitch and continue doing what they had been doing, the boys ignored that and went a more direct route to the Farnborough try line, scoring four tries in the process. With 12minutes left in the match Fording’Ton had a healthy 30-17 lead. Farnborough 2’s then made wholesale changes in their backline and this resulted in more cohesion and definitely more size. They roared back with into the game with two converted tries, meaning Fording’Ton led by just one point with one minute of the match remaining.
A well executed restart saw Fording’Ton retain the ball and when Jacob ‘launched’ the ball over the touchline, Fording’Ton celebrated prematurely as the Referee decided there was enough time on the watch for one last play.
Game over, as Farnborough, to the huge relief of the large contingent of Fording’Ton travelling supporters, wasted their opportunity by being caught offside from the lineout.
Final Score – Farnborough 2’s 29 Fording’Ton 30.
Before the game, all that was asked of the boys was that they each did their job. And that they aim to do that better than their opposite number…’and if you do that you’ll win by one point’.
