Mark Hammond, 22, the Fordingbridge full back, won the President’s Shield for the Player of the Year at the club’s Annual Dinner and Awards ceremony held at Burgate School last weekend – a most enjoyable function attended by 150 club members and friends.

Report by Rob Burrows

Hammond, for so long a fixture in the 2nd XV, only established himself as a “regular” in the 1st XV this season. However he had an outstanding year, overcoming the adversity of losing his father, and emerging not only as the last line of the best defence in the Hampshire League but also as the top points scorer with 234 – made up of 10 tries, 18 penalty goals and 65 conversions.
Dan Brown,29, the Burgate Schoolteacher and multi-purpose back, was the club’s leading try scorer for a record eighth successive year. Brown touched down 15 times in 22 matches but was run close by Rob Hay, the injury-hit Welsh No 8, with 13 in 17 games.
Equal third with Hammond in the try scoring charts on 10 was the centre, Mat Norton, who was awarded the Captain’s Trophy. Norton led the side to the runners-up spot in the Hampshire League for the second year in a row and came so close to promotion.
Brown’s brother Steve, arguably the best playmaker in the League at No.10, was named the 1st XV’s Players’ Player for the second successive season, and the third time in all, while the all-action prop Bobby Brown, 21, won the Simon Wareham Trophy for the Young Player of the Year.
The rampaging second-row forward, Alex Tattersall, was named as the Coaches’ Player and the Tony O’Connell Trophy for the most improved player was won by Anton Mayes, the second-row forward who showed such consistent form in a difficult year for the 2nd XV. Players’ Player and top try scorer for the 2nd XV was Mike Parry while Dean Lewis was named Squadman of the Year
In the ladies section The Timmy Green Cup for the Players’ Player went to Georgie Price, who had recently represented Fordingbridge in the New Forest Barbarians side that won the inaugural Hampshire Touch Tournament.
In the newly formed Colts section Ross Bealey was awarded Player of the Year and Players’ Player. Jake Kostelyck was named Most Improved Colt and Paddy Gogin was the Top Try Scorer. In addition Gogin collected the Outstanding Player in the Colts/Junior section. One of the Colts’ coaches, the former 1st XV scrum-half, Richard Gulliver, picked up Clubman of the Year.
Finally a note for diary. The club’s AGM – to which it is hoped all members will attend - will be held at the Sports Club in the Recreation Ground on Tuesday evening, June 4th.
